Application for front porch reconstruction:

5/16/2007: 1760 Summit Avenue, Summit West Historic District, by David Heide Design
Studios, for a building permit to construct an addition, alter the front entrance and
other site improvements. File #07-179. (Spong, 266-9079)

6/14/2007: "The letter went to the City Council as part of the packet. The second appeal is the front porch and the retaining wall that was denied at 1760 Summit. The commission approved the additions at the rear, but they are appealing the front porch alteration and the retaining wall change, also on June 20. Wilsey asked if the commission has ever approved a facade change. Staff said the commission many years ago allowed a dormer. Larson has written a statement that staff will include in 1760 Summit packet to City Council. The appellant submitted 37 pages. Larson statement was that that is not how we approach historic districts; it's about preserving the character of each individual structure as unique. Staff will be doing staff reports for each of them. " (HPC Minutes 6/14/2007)

6/28/07: "With the 1760 Summit appeal, Pat Harris did something to kind of meet in the middle of the road, he allowed them to rebuild the retaining wall with a new cap, but the cap has to be of a material of less of a contrast to what that limestone was going to be. The wall is very dark brown. The thinking is that it won't be such an obvious change to choose a material. Wilsey asked if it was run by staff. Staff said it was. They will have to propose something. They have to come up with an appropriate solution, and it could be colored concrete, staff didn't know. Harris allowed an extension, but required that they look at alternatives which may or may not include columns, and that would come back to the HPC for review. Staff said basically they can get their extension but some of the commission members had concerns about the actual approach or the actual design of the columns it is kind of pushing them to explore an extension without columns and looking at structural feasibility of that. Staff thought with new technology and new structural materials there is a creative way to do that. Staff has not heard from them and they didn't know what their choice was going to be. " (HPC Meeting Minutes 6/28/2007)

The HPC recommended denial of the porch. The decision is currently under appeal. For more information, download the complete minutes from the various meetings of the HPC.
